Camping Update with photos

We climbed to the top of Mount Tomaree.

Then we looked over the beach below. If you look very closely at the centre of the photo you will see a black dot. This turned out to be a shark, we think a great white shark. My girlfriend used her super dooper camera telescopic lens to take better pictures and it was actually a shark! People were on the beach not far from there, but nobody was in the water.

See the people on the beach?

Great view! Mr Techno and I keep warm at the top of Mount Tomaree.

Barbie girl likes camping too.

We swam at the beach, we kayaked, lay in the sunshine and buried Barbie Girl in the sand and made her a mermaid tail.

We found a little sand crab.

We had outdoor barbeques at night time with our friends, and toasted marshallows over an open flame.

We had a little wildlife visitor.

We made memories together.

Cookie baking

Barbie Girl and I love to bake together.

We baked cookies together this week.

Check out the cross eyed grumpy one , top left corner. He was the favourite and Barbie Girl chose to have that one first for afternoon tea.

These cookies were huge. I was anticipating making small delicate bite sized ones, to make around 50 small cookies.

Barbie Girl had other ideas. We put the ball of cookie dough in the fridge for 30 mins to chill. I went off to have a shower, and when I came back down, Barbie Girl had already rolled out the dough and made 13 huge kid sized cookies.

So into the oven they went. We mixed up blue and red icing and tried out the piping set for the first time.

These are a favourite now.

I’m a big Donna Hay fan. Love your work Donna! Below is a recipe we have tweaked from Donna Hay, Modern Classics 2.  However our version bears no physical resemblance to her delicate vanilla snap cookies. Here is the recipe.

Smiley Face Cookies

185 g butter

1 cup caster sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla essence

2 1/2 cups plain flour

1 egg

1 egg yolk extra

1. Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius

2. Mix butter, sugar and vanilla in mixmaster  or food processor until smooth.

3. Add the flour, egg and egg yolk and mix again to from a smooth dough.

4. Knead the dough lightly, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 mins.

5. Make balls of dough in size you would like and flatten.

6. Place on baking tray on top of silicone baking sheet or baking paper.

7. Bake for 10-12 mins, or a little longer until golden.

8. Cool on wire racks.

9. Pipe on icing or dust with icing sugar.

Enjoy for morning or afternoon tea!

50th wedding anniversary

Congratulations to my parents on the weekend of their 50th wedding anniversary.

We had a family reunion in Sydney. We treated mum and dad to 3 days staying at a gorgeous hotel suite in the city. My brother flew in from Hong Kong, other family members from Melbourne, and regional New South Wales.

Celebrations included dinners overlooking Sydney harbour, lunches, cousins playing together, reminiscing with family over childhood memories of growing up in our family, laughing, skyping with a family member who was unable to attend from interstate, speeches, comedy routines, more laughter and lashings of cake.

Mr Techno played Barista for the weekend. He was very popular with the “outlaws.”

It was wonderful to see my parents so happy and in love after all of these years together.

Here is the speech that I gave at their celebration.

Thank you for all coming together today as a family to celebrate the 50th Wedding Anniversary, the Golden Anniversary of our Mum and Dad, Gran and Grandad, We are creating an occasion and a family memory here today.

Firstly I want to express my best wishes and love to Mum and Dad on this special occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

The 50th year is known as the Golden Anniversary, and is a very special one as we all know. Mum and Dad, you are in good company too. Amongst others who have celebrated this special occasion are The Queen and Prince Philip who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1997.

What a remarkable fifty years they have been!

Mum and Dad were married 50 years ago. What was the world like in 1961? This was a time before The Beatles, before Man landed on the moon, before there was a woman Prime Minister of Australia, a black President of the United States, the internet, mobile phones and big screen televisions. Perhaps there was no running water, electricity, ANY kind of phone, decimal currency. Maybe even prior to the invention of the wheel.

It is important to recognise your achievements in your family life. You had and raised 3 wonderful children. You also have 5 loving grandchildren.

Mum and Dad were catching a train down to visit us in Sydney and a man was watching them walking along holding hands. He later spoke to them and said that was what “Love” looked like.

Mum and Dad have always been a close-knit unit. They go on their walks together, watch TV together, eat together, work at home together, and nap together. They are a unit. They travel in a pair. So much so that when one of their grandchildren was a preschooler Mum and Dad were not referred to as Gran and Grandad. Instead they were referred to as “the Boy one and the Girl one”.

It is a match made in heaven: Mum talks Dad listens.

Supermarket visits are a source of entertainment for Mum and Dad. Mum has a habit of sneezing uncontrollably in the supermarket aisles when she walks near washing detergent. She has been known to sneeze up to 29 times. Loudly. Very loudly indeed. In an attempt to escape from this spectacle on one occasion, Dad took off down another aisle and stood still looking at some items on some shelves very steadfastly He was motionless and concentrating intently. Minutes passed. After some time, a customer in the supermarket walked up to him and poked him, and when he jumped in response, she was very alarmed and exclaimed “Oh, you are REAL!”

Mum likes to cook up healthy dinners for Dad. She has a crush on Jamie Oliver, John Williamson and Rolf Harris. She loves to play the organ and the piano accordion. She loves to sing and listen to John Williamson. She likes craft and to quill and make beautiful handmade cards for her loved ones. She likes to go for her daily walks, and attend her gym classes with Dad. She is an acupuncture enthusiast. She loves talking. She loves her computer when it is working. She keeps abreast of things on the internet and likes to email her friends and family. She loves her children and her grandchildren.

Dad loves his garden. He lovingly and diligently tends his veggies and his herbs. He has downsized his shed and shed time over the past 6 years since he moved to the Coast. In response his hearing has correspondingly decreased as he spends more time inside the house instead of pottering in his shed. Is there a connection? Who can tell? He likes to grow a moustache sometimes. . He cultivates an impressive sock and tie collection.
He likes to keep up with current affairs and watch travel shows. He likes to keep up with current affairs in his street too by sneaking a peek out the window. He enjoys watching football. He enjoys watching his favourite shows on his flat screen TV. He loves his children and his grandchildren.

One of my clearest, enduring memories of my parents together was when I was a child in the 1970s in the family home. My Dad would come home from work at the same time every night. Mum would watch out for the car arriving. Dad would come in the back door, put his brown leather kit bag down. Mum would meet him in the kitchen, and they would stand in the middle of the kitchen with their arms wrapped around each other, giving each other a long, private loving hug.

So a toast to Mum and Dad, Gran and Grandad on this most special of occasions. We wish you all the best and send you our love on Your 50th Wedding Anniversary.

May health bless your bodies,
May wealth pack your pockets,
May joy fill your future,
May your love last forever

To Mum and Dad. Congratulations on 50 years of marriage.

Night swim

I just had a lovely time with Mr Techno and Barbie Girl.
I returned from my daily walk, at about 8pm. The sun has just set, and they were in the pool.
So I rinsed off,and then joined them in the pool for an hour. It has been a hot day, and the water was warm.
There is something special about going for a swim at night. It was dark, but there are pool lights under the water which gives it a lovely atmosphere.

I have rediscovered a simple pleasure..swimming at night time.

A couple of days away in the mountains

We have been away in a little cottage up in the Blue Mountains for a couple of days family holiday.

.

I love discovering waterfalls.

I love the mountains, the air is so fresh, and it is so pretty with all of the beautiful flora and fauna to enjoy.

An evening out

It is Sydney Festival time in Sydney at the moment. Yesterday was the Festival opening.

We collected our picnic things together. Mr Techno made home made chicken nuggets and pork spare ribs. We had fresh strawberries, blueberries, bananas and brie cheese. ( Where was the salad I asked? LOL).

We grabbed a blanket and headed for the train into the city.

The city was buzzing with activity.

We decided upon a grassy spot in Hyde Park in front of a stage for our picnic and entertainment spot.

We spent a lovely few hours enjoying the music and circus performers on a warm Summers evening.

Barbie Girl even got up on Mr Technos shoulder to wave her arms in the air with her glow stick to the musicians on stage.

At around 9pm we looked around us and realized that the demographic had changed, ie no longer families with children or older adults.

Time to go home.

It was a very relaxing and enjoyable al fresco evening.

Renovation Project #1 Laying timber floors in the living room

I can't believe we are really doing this

My husband and I have never renovated anything by ourselves in our lives. In the past, we have undertaken renovations, mainly painting and installing timber flooring in our last home. The floor installation cost about $15,000 about 5 years ago, just for the floors. Most of this was the cost of labour. As we were time poor cash rich ( at the time, I was commuting to and from work 3 hours minimum each day to my full time finance job) we engaged a company to do it for us. Fast forward five years to 2010 and we want to renovate our townhome. We have much less cash as we have changed our lifestyle so that I can be home more. So we are doing the renovations this time ourselves! The first room is the living room. I don't like carpet at the best of times, so up with the 16 year old carpet, and we are laying the timber floor ourselves. We researched how to do it, and armed with the tools of the trade, here we go! Although I don’t appear in the photos, I am kitted out in all the same gear, and we did the renovation together. I was the photographer and movie maker as well as DIY renovator. (Yes we made a home movie about this, warts and all!) I actually enjoyed doing this together with my husband. We had some “moments”, like when he hit his thumb, and when we had laid about a quarter of the floor and had to take it up again due to a misunderstanding of the instructions, but on the whole, it was really good fun, and very satisfying. Renovation Project #1 is now complete.

A Milestone

This morning, we took Barbie Girl down to the local netball courts with her Big Girl Bike she received for her birthday.

Streamers were blowing in the wind from the handlebars, the shiny pink and white bike raced manically across the 4 netball courts.

Then Dad got off the bike, to let Barbie Girl have a turn.

Donning her pink and white helmet, Dad running closely behind, she pedalled, uncertainly at first, then more confidently.

I held my breath when there were wobbles, and yelled out encouragement.
Pedal! Pedal!

After a half hour session, she can now, tentatively, ride a two wheel bike in a straight line on her own!

No more trainer wheels.

The next sessions are how to stop and how to turn around !

A trip to the bakery was in order to celebrate the occasion – a custard tart for me, cinnamon donut for Mr Techno and of course a finger bun with icing and cinnamon for the Barbie Girl, the rider of the Big Girl Bike.
